Although evidence of dentistry dates back to 5000 B.C., pediatric dentistry didn’t gain traction until the 1900s! Today, it is recognized as a specialty by The American Dental Association and plays a crucial role in helping kids keep their smiles happy and healthy throughout the years. Keep reading to learn all about the history of pediatric dentistry over the last 100+ years.
Let’s Go Back to 1913
The “invention” of pediatric dentistry began back in 1913. At the time, Alfred C. Jones, an American dentist, opened Fones Clinic For Dental Hygienists. The students who attended cleaned school children’s teeth, which was revolutionary at the time. Simultaneously, Minne Evangeline Jordan, a dental assistant in Los Angeles, opened a dental practice just for kids.
Leaping Forward to the 1940s
In the 1940s, pediatric dentistry got a huge recognition from The American Dental Association. The acknowledgement of it being its own specialty led to a significant increase in children going to the dentist at least once a year. This was a huge step forward since these routine checkups and cleanings play an essential role in forming good dental habits, catching cavities in the early stages, and preventing tooth decay.
Present Day Pediatric Dentistry
Over the last few decades, pediatric dentistry has advanced exponentially. In fact, nearly 90% of children visit their dentist annually. Plus, the field has expanded to include more than just dental checkups and cleanings. Today, children can get cavity-preventing dental sealants, fluoride treatments to reduce their risk of tooth decay, tooth-colored fillings to restore any damaged teeth, and more!
The Future of the Field
There is no doubt that pediatric dentistry has come a long way since 1913. Moving forward, a continued emphasis should be placed on the importance of caring for children’s teeth. After all, even their primary ones (which eventually fall out) play a crucial role in their ability to communicate clearly, smile confidently, and chew effectively.
Today, pediatric dentistry is essential to both the oral health and overall well-being of each and every child. So, we can all be grateful for the pioneers of this specialty back in 1913. If your child’s six-month dental checkup and cleaning is not yet on the calendar, use this as a reminder to schedule it!
