Braces with Baby Teeth: An Introduction to Phase 1 Orthodontics

Often, braces are thought of as a treatment for teenagers. Some parents might assume that if their child still has baby teeth, they are not yet ready for orthodontic care. Very often, however, the opposite is true. Experts recommend that children have their first orthodontic checkup before age 7.

During your child’s appointment, their orthodontist might recommend that they undergo phase 1 orthodontics. What does that mean, and what can you expect with treatment? This blog post explains.

Phase 1 Orthodontics: The Basics

Phase 1 orthodontics is also sometimes referred to as interceptive orthodontics. Whatever you call it, the basic principles remain the same. This treatment usually starts after patients have started to lose their baby teeth but well before all of their permanent teeth come in (usually between 6 and 9 years of age). It may involve the use of braces, but other orthodontic appliances may come into play as well. For example, your child might need a palatal expander to create more room in their upper dental arch. Space maintainers are also sometimes used to preserve room in the jaw for incoming adult teeth.

In some cases, phase 1 orthodontics is a standalone treatment that sets up a child for a lifetime of well-aligned teeth and jaws. In other instances, phase 1 care is followed by phase 2 orthodontics a few years down the road. (Phase 2 orthodontics usually involves braces in the adolescent years.)

Since every case is unique, you will have to consult with your child’s orthodontist to find out exactly what to expect during their treatment journey.

The Benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontics

Phase 1 orthodontics offers some remarkable benefits:

  • Preserve space for adult teeth. Phase 1 care can support the development and proper eruption of permanent teeth.
  • Promote proper breathing. Orthodontic care early in life may support the health of your child’s upper airway, reducing their risk of snoring, sleep apnea and daytime mouth breathing.
  • Reduced risk of oral health problems. Straightening the teeth early in life can make it easier for your child to maintain good oral hygiene, which can reduce their risk of cavities and gum disease.
  • Reduced need for future treatment. Even if your child needs phase 2 orthodontic treatment, it will likely be less extensive than the care they would need if they had never completed phase 1.
