The holiday season is right around the corner, which means the weather will finally be cooler, you’ll have more time to see friends and family, and of course, there will be plenty of seasonal foods and treats to enjoy in the upcoming few weeks! But if you have metal braces, you might be feeling a little discouraged; after all, the hardware is known for making tasks like eating a little trickier, not to mention, some items can’t be enjoyed very easily. Rest assured, you don’t have to settle for a holiday season that doesn’t excite your taste buds. Here are some must-know tips to help you enjoy all your favorite holiday meals with braces.
Tip #1. Mind Your Diet
Braces are notorious for coming with a long list of dietary restrictions, including all sorts of items: popcorn (especially the fun, Christmas-themed tins of caramel corn), chewy and sticky candies, particularly hard or crunchy foods, tough cuts of meat, and more. Fortunately, the holiday season features all sorts of festive foods and dishes that aren’t just delicious, but conveniently braces-friendly! These foods include mashed potatoes, carrots, yams, squash, stuffing, and several more. Also keep in mind that you can pour gravy over your cut-up turkey, softening it up enough for your braces. Lastly, have a little patience when it comes to eating—it might be tough to adjust to eating with braces at first, so don’t rush, cut up and chew your food thoroughly, and know that it gets easier with time.
Tip #2. Don’t Neglect Your Oral Hygiene
Inevitably, there will be instances when food becomes stuck in your teeth and braces after you’ve eaten, regardless of what you’ve put on your plate. This is why you must continue with your oral hygiene regimen throughout the holidays, no matter how busy things get. Brushing and flossing directly after eating is important if you have braces; lingering food particles can easily fuel cavity-causing bacteria, and the last thing you should want for Christmas is a cavity!
Tip #3. Pack a Dental Kit
On a related note, if you’re planning on traveling during the holidays, be sure that you’re packing a braces care kit to take with you. This way, no matter where you are or what you’re eating, you’ll be able to properly care for your teeth and braces. This kit doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive, but at least include the essentials: a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and orthodontic wax.
