Invisalign is quickly becoming the most popular orthodontic treatment available, and it’s easy to see why! Not only are these clear aligners removable and practically invisible, but they can help address a wide range of misalignment issues. Whether you have a moderate bite problem that could lead to TMJ disorder in the future or mildly crooked or gapped teeth that are making you feel self-conscious, Invisalign can help. But what about if you’re interested in only fixing your top teeth? This is called single-arch treatment. Read on to learn more about how it works and if it’s right for you!
Invisalign for Single-Arch Treatment
The majority of Invisalign cases are designed to adjust the top and bottom arches of teeth simultaneously. In the beginning of your treatment, your orthodontist will examine your teeth and jaws carefully, taking X-rays and impressions as needed. This information is then sent to a lab where it’s used to map out an entire series of aligners that gradually moves your teeth into their ideal positions. The top and bottom aligners are worn at the same time for about two weeks, with each set representing one step closer to the final results.
This process is largely the same for single-arch Invisalign treatment, except you will naturally only need aligners for the arch you’d like to correct. During your periodic checkups, your orthodontist will be monitoring your treatment’s progress as well as observing the alignment of your jaws and lower arch to ensure everything about your smile is staying on track.
Are You A Candidate for Single-Arch Invisalign Treatment?
It’s important to keep in mind that single-arch Invisalign treatment can’t correct all the same types of issues that a full, double-arch treatment can. The most common example is bite problems. While very minor overbites can sometimes be corrected with a single-arch treatment, most bite alignment issues will require treatment for both arches. However, if you have mildly crowded or gapped top teeth, Invisalign for your upper arch may be a good solution. Patients with severe orthodontic issues or rotated teeth are not typically good candidates for Invisalign, and your mouth will need to be healthy and free of issues like cavities and gum disease prior to treatment as well.
What to Consider Before Getting Invisalign for Your Top Teeth Only
Choosing Invisalign for your top teeth only may be more complicated than you first expect. Moving your teeth can change how your bite comes together. If you move only your top teeth without adjusting your bottom teeth accordingly, you may end up with a bite problem that you didn’t have previously. Additionally, you should keep in mind that getting straighter teeth is about more than just looks. Even though you can see your top teeth more frequently than your bottom teeth, it’s important that all your teeth are aligned properly to keep your smile healthy and strong in the long run. Even if your bottom teeth aren’t bothering you, your orthodontist may detect indications that your bottom teeth may need Invisalign just as much as your top teeth.
While rare, it is indeed possible to get Invisalign only for your top teeth. To see if single-arch Invisalign treatment is right for you, schedule a consultation with your orthodontist.
